Water Safety Tips

Did you know that the leading cause of death in autistic children is drowning ? In fact, autistic kiddos are 160 times more likely to die from drowning as the general pediatric population.

One of the main reasons for drowning starts off with elopement and wandering. Our kiddos have interesting minds and have no awareness of danger that could be awaiting them. Here are my recommended water safety tips ⬇️

1️⃣Swim lessons- Adaptive swim lessons typically are smaller in size or even 1 on 1, focus on your child’s skill set, have printed material, and are typically in a quite area to prevent sensory overload. Also, if you are the parent or caregiver doesn’t know how to swim I encourage you to have swim lessons as well.

2️⃣Stay vigilant- It’s the summer time which means pool parties, beach trips, hotel fun, and so much more. Remember to keep a close eye on your kiddo as well as let others around you know they your kiddo may wander off. This will give you extra help with keeping your kiddo safe.

3️⃣Home safety equipment- I highly recommend gates around the pool & doors locked at all times. Keeping safety locks on doors & having alarms/chimes can be the very thing that prevents your child’s elopement. If your kiddo loves water having the correct size/fit flotation device is a must. If you are okay with the backpack harness or the anti lost wrist links this could be something you invest in as well at water parks or large water gatherings.

4️⃣If your kiddo is in ABA- discuss programming for water safety with their BCBA that can be implemented at their center as well as at home.

5️⃣Social Stories & Videos- if your kiddo is a visual learner create or find a book & or video social stories that talk about water safety, “fun in the sun/water”, dos & dont’s around water etc.

6️⃣Knowing the Signs of Drowning- 1. The person is quiet, 2. The person is hyperventilating or gasping, 3. The person is unable to focus, 4. They are in an upright position and not using their legs. These are just some of the signs but there are plenty more.
